Creative Activities to Try This Weekend with Your Family

Looking for something different to do this weekend? Why not challenge your family’s creativity and engage their minds with fun activities? This will get everyone out of their comfort zones and have them learn new things. Here are a few ideas to spark the imagination and help you create lasting memories.

Make a Scavenger Hunt

Create an outdoor scavenger hunt to get your family to explore the area and discover hidden treasures. Make a list of items they’ll need to find, such as feathers, rocks, leaves, flowers, or whatever else you can come up with. Then set a timer and see who can find all the items first! You can even make it more challenging by having them take pictures of what they find using their phones or cameras. You can up the game every time you do it by adding more items or changing the locations. You can incorporate a theme, like nature or animals. You can even add clues and puzzles for your teens to solve as part of the hunt.

Construct Something Out of Recycled Materials

Gather old cardboard boxes, paper towel rolls, egg cartons, and plastic bottles (pretty much anything you can recycle). You can challenge your family to build something from these materials. You could make mini-fortresses, robots, or creatures from outer space! And the best part is when they’re done building whatever masterpiece they’ve created, they can break it down and recycle all the materials again! Recycling is also a great way to teach your kids the importance of caring for our planet.

Design a Board Game

Got some spare pieces of paper or boards lying around? Grab them up and challenge your family to design their own board game. They’ll have to develop rules for playing the game and tasks players must complete for someone to win. Then have them draw out a board from scratch on which players move around while playing the game. It’s great fun that encourages problem-solving skills too. It doesn’t matter if the problems are too easy to solve or too hard; the point is that they are using their creativity to come up with different ways to play.

Creative Writing Exercises

Get your family’s creativity flowing with a creative writing exercise. Have each family member write a short story based on a prompt or give them free rein to create their masterpiece. After everyone has finished, have a group discussion about what they wrote and how it made them feel to express themselves creatively.

You can focus on a specific topic per week and have everyone think of what to write during the week, or you can surprise them each time with a new prompt. Enfranchise your family to express themselves differently and showcase their inner writers. Writing is a good exercise, especially for kids, to help them express their thoughts and feelings differently. If you have a family member that’s not yet comfortable writing, you can get them to draw out their thoughts instead.

Puzzles

Keep those minds active with puzzles! Puzzles come in all shapes and sizes—from jigsaw puzzles to word searches—so there’s something for everyone in the family. You can even make it into a competition if you wish by seeing who can finish first or solve the most difficult puzzle in an allotted amount of time. You can buy the best crossword puzzle books to get started. These books have many puzzles to choose from and challenge your family members differently. Plus, you can get them at a great price online or in stores. You can make this more challenging by adding prizes for completing the puzzles in particular time frames. It’s fun and educational, too, as puzzles help with problem-solving skills and boost memory. Plus, they’re a great way to bond as a family. Depending on the type of puzzle you choose, you can even invite friends over for some friendly competition!

Create Art Outdoors

Take your family outside and let them express their creative side by creating art in nature. All you need are leaves, twigs, stones, dirt, and sand. Let everyone pick up whatever they find interesting and create a masterpiece! You can also use water to make colorful designs on the ground or play around with light and shadows. This is a great activity with your kids, encouraging them to get creative and explore their surroundings. Plus, they’ll be getting some fresh air while they create. When they’re finished, you can take photos of their work and hang them around the house for everyone to admire.

Whether you choose one of these activities or come up with your idea, there are plenty of ways to keep everyone entertained this weekend while getting the minds working in new ways. So why not give it a try? Who knows what kind of great creations may come out of it? Have fun and happy creating!
