Coastal Maine Popcorn Co’s Cinnamon Apple Popcorn

As we get further and further into our quarantine life, snacks seem to be a high priority. I mean, I want snacks. I want them very much. All the snacks. Just ask my fully fleshed tum. So when I received this bag, flavored popcorn ‘tis. I mean, I love multiplex ‘corn, and who doesn’t love apple pie? Two great tastes that taste great together?

Um, nope. The flavor combo of popcorn and sweet cinnamon apple just don’t do it for me. Maybe it’s the overly sweet syrup, or whatever artificial flavor gives the corn a strange cardboard-y apple pie aftertaste. Maybe it’s just that I’m a savory popcorn gal (I’m not a big fan of kettle corn either if I’m being honest.) Whatever it is, it’s too much for my tastebuds and brainparts to wrap around, and I found myself wishing this flavor was in a liqueur, or taken for a spin as a funky riff on the ol’ snickerdoodle. After perusing the company’s website, I started drooling over flavors like Dill Pickle, Honey Mustard, and Smoked Cheddar. Shall I try another handful of apple cinnamon? Sure…and nope. Just not my bag. Quite literally.

Which brings me to the ‘corn itself. A nice chew, firm and fluffy kernels, and minimal bits that get stuck in-between tooth and gum. A surprisingly hearty popcorn for one that’s air-popped, and the lack of greasy-popcorn hands is wonderful, as is the low-fat stats in the nutritional info. This is definitely a popcorn you can indulge in, if you’re into the taste. Me? I just look at the bag longingly, willing it to become white cheddar…or better still, the trio of butter/caramel/cheddar that seems to be the exception to my no-sweet-popcorn rule.

You’re getting your money’s worth with this brand, as they seem to strain out the bits that make the bottom of a movie theater bucket look like sadness in popcorn form. Even with the shipping from Maine to the DC area, the kernels are no worse from the trip than they’d be freshly packed at the store, and there’s a whole lot of popcorn in a bag. No air-spaces of neglect here. Well done, popcorn folks. And the delightful crunch makes me sad that I’m not loving the flavor profile here. But there are tons of flavors to peruse…and for my next popcorn nosh I’ll stick with my particular wheelhouse…well, maybe a bag of Unicorn Toots too. Because with a name like that, I can’t help myself.
